I feel so much better today! I slept pretty well and had good energy when I got out of bed. I’m convinced that the restorative yoga, resting and eating less fat yesterday helped get rid of whatever my body was fighting. I am so thankful that I have the knowledge of alternative therapies to help me. I hope that I can help any of you reading this with this knowledge.
My GI system is feeling good today too. The digestive enzymes are a miracle. If you’re using them and not feeling the benefit then you either need to switch the brand that you’re using or increase the dose. The digestive enzymes help to supplement the enzymes that your body makes to digest food. Most people with Hashimoto’s have hypochlorhydria (fancy name for low stomach acid) due to one or more of the following: hypothyroidism, autoantibodies against intrinsic factor or parietal cells in the stomach, H. pylori infections or taking acid suppressing medications to relieve heartburn.
The pH of your stomach is around 2 in order to break down your food. If you’re not producing enough stomach acid you won’t properly break down your food, especially protein, which will result in malabsorption , pain, bloating and gas. Over time this will irritate your GI tract which can lead to leaky gut. Leaky gut allows larger than normal particles of food to cross from the GI tract to the blood stream. These larger particles trigger an immune response because your immune system thinks these large particles are invaders. Leaky gut is one of the factors that needs to be present to develop an autoimmune disease.
The other enzymes I use are for digesting fiber, carbohydrates and fats. The pancreas is known for producing the hormone insulin which helps to regulate blood sugar but it’s also responsible for producing digestive enzymes called amylase and lipase which break down carbohydrates and fats. My pancreas isn’t producing enough of these enzymes so taking supplemental enzymes are helping me to break down my food better which is decreasing the rock feeling I was getting in my stomach after eating.
I was using a different brand of enzymes previously and didn’t feel any difference whether I used them or not. I would get a rock feeling in my stomach or scraping pains in my liver or bloated after eating. Over the past few weeks of increasing my Betaine HCL with Pepsin to 5-7 per meal and the Ultra Digestive Enzymes to 4 per meal and the Digestion GB to 2 per high fat meal I haven’t had those sensations. The less energy my body spends on digestion or pain from digestion the more energy I have to do other things.
If you’re having gas or bloating after meals, undigested food in your poop or have nutrient deficiencies digestive enzymes may be helpful for you. If you’re eating a nutrient dense diet but not extracting the nutrients from your food you’re not gonna be helping your body.
I was able to do more than 2 things today which is a great day for me. Usually I have to make a decision of doing 1 or 2 things outside of my house before I get too wiped out. Today I was able to walk the dogs, cook some bison butternut squash meatballs, do yoga, take a shower, go out to visit my mother and take my kids to the craft store before I ate lunch. That may not sound like a lot to most people but for me getting up at 5:00 am and not feeling the need to rest till 2:30 is really big.
Overall I’m feeling really hopeful that my body is healing. It’s been almost 2 months on this diet and I’m definitely feeling improvements. Today is add a new food day. I wanted to take it easy with fat so decided on trying another kind of squash instead of adding coconut milk. I’m adding red kuri squash. It’s mild tasting and only has 9 grams of carbs per cup.
All of the winter squashes have made good bases for the squash gelatin bites I’ve been making which are a good portable snack. I felt like I was eating too many bananas which were messing with my blood sugar because they are a portable easily digestible snack for me. Having the gelatin and little bit of coconut oil in the bites helps to balance out my blood sugar better or at least that’s what I believe.
